A Brief History of Boy Scout Troop 201

Boy Scout Troop 201 was first registered in the Theodore Roosevelt Council, Nassau County, Long Island, New York in June, 1973. The first charter on file at the Council Office is dated December 31, 1973, and lists Center Street School PTA as the chartering organization. The Executive Officer of the PTA at the time was Judy Jagoda, and the charter lists Center Street School as the first meeting place - meetings were scheduled for Sunday nights. Joseph Herman appears as the first Scoutmaster in June, 1973, but Raymond Cristobal took over as Scoutmaster in September of the same year.

It's clear that Troop 201 was formed to accommodate the graduating Cub Scouts of Pack 201, chartered by Center Street School in October, 1969. Many of the names associated with the Cub Pack appear on the original Troop charter.

In 1977, troop meetings moved to Herricks Junior High School (Middle School) and the meeting day was changed to Monday. In 1982, meetings were moved to Herricks Community Center. In 1987, there was a change in the troop's sponsorship: Searing/Roslyn United Methodist Church became the charter organization, and Wilbert Bradley was the executive officer who signed the charter renewal each year.

Beginning in October, 1993, the charter includes the addition of a second sponsor: Williston Post #144 American Legion, with Paul Kurz as Executive Officer. Both sponsors appeared on the charter, and the troop continued to meet at the Searing/Roslyn United Methodist Church.

Next in October, 2003, the charter reflected a change to full sponsorship by Post #144, with Robert Robesch as the executive officer. We also had a new venue for meetings, Herricks Schools have been a great partner in the growth of Troop 201 now meeting at the Searingtown School in Albertson. Parent meetings are at the Herricks Community Center where Troop 201 has two display cases at the south end of the main hallway on the 1st floor, one decorated with photographs and memorabilia, the other dedicated as the “Wall of Honor” displaying the names of all Eagle Scouts from Troop 201.

Troop 201 continues to offer outstanding programming and high adventure for its scouts. This began with high adventure backpacking in 2009, 2011 and 2013 to Philmont Scout Reservation in Cimarron, New Mexico. Since that time, the troop has visited all of the remaining BSA National High Adventure Bases. This includes participating in high adventure aquatic activities in Sea Base in Key West, Florida in 2014 and 2018, high adventure action sports at Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia in 2016 as well as high adventure paddling in the Northern Tier in Minnesota in 2016. These were in addition to the troop maintaining its alternating year trip to Philmont, most recently in 2015, 2017 and 2019.

Since adding the balance of BSA National High Adventure Bases to its rotation, a number of Troop 201 scouts have earned the rare and highly sought after Triple Crown of High Adventure Award from the Charles L. Sommers Alumni Association. This award honors those Scouts with a thirst for high adventure who participate in three high adventure bases during their scouting career. The first Troop 201 scouts to earn the Triple Crown of High Adventure were James Russo, Nicolas Ryan and Christopher Soo in 2016. In 2018, two scouts, Michael Russo and Christopher Soo, were the first to earn the even rarer Grand Slam of High Adventure by visiting all four high adventure bases.

Troop 201 continues to offer the best BSA has to offer with additional future high adventure events planned. Crews are being formed for Philmont in the summer of 2021!

Membership in Troop 201 has been steadily increasing from the 40s and 50s in the 1990’s and 2000’s to its highest level ever in 2017 – 93 registered scouts!

The first scout to reach the rank of Eagle Scout was Michael Krohn in 1980. To date, Troop 201 has produced over 100 Eagle Scouts.
